Job description
About Walden University
The Postdoctoral Fellowship is a learning role focused on preparing selected candidates with limited to no teaching experience to teach and mentor, effectively and proficiently use online technology and resources to support student learning, and complete additional fellowship commitments in a higher education setting. This is accomplished in an environment that is built around a community of care and sense of belonging and is respectful of students, the Fellow, Walden University, and the discipline in which the Fellow is involved. Fellows are expected to adhere to all Walden University Faculty expectations, which are clearly set forth to the Fellow at the start of their employment with the University, and to engage with the Walden community in ways that reflect and support Walden University’s mission. Fellowship positions are temporary and will last for a period of no more than one year. Acceptance into the Walden University Postdoctoral Fellowship does not guarantee continued employment beyond the Fellowship program. Fellows are compensated for courses taught. Selection committees will consider a range of factors, including applicants’ ability to support students’ development and preparation to serve, educate, and inform their communities, especially communities that are traditionally underserved.
Visit WaldenU.edu for more information, and follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
Training: All new Fellows receive specific ongoing training from Walden University in teaching practices, use of an electronic learning platform, specifics of the policies, procedures and degree programs of the School or College in which they are going to teach, socialization into the Walden University culture, assessment of academic integrity of student work (including use of www.turnitin.com), and mentoring. Fellows must successfully complete their training(s) to begin shadowing and teaching.
Course Shadowing & Teaching: Fellows will participate in shadowing a course, which is taught using the Canvas LMS, for their first term while meeting with a mentor to complete specific activities. Fellows will be assigned a course in subsequent terms, which is taught using the Canvas LMS, and will work with a mentor on a consistent basis. Fellows are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, they must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University. Per the Faculty Handbook, responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Fellows are required to verify the accuracy of student postings and submissions and to provide feedback and grades to students through Canvas. Additionally, substantive feedback on assignment rubrics must be provided within 5 days of submission and grades posted through Canvas.
Availability: Walden expects Fellows and faculty to be reasonably accessible to students. Faculty members are expected to be available to students outside the course discussion board and in addition to providing substantive feedback on assignments and postings. Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi, instructor information in the classroom, and/or other appropriate documents. The university suggests regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours or regular online chats.
Fellowship Commitments: Fellows participate virtually in a Kick-off, monthly coaching sessions, professional development and service opportunities, shadowing, teaching, and supervisor and mentoring meetings. They will also collaborate with a coach, mentor, and supervisor to develop and reflect on an annual plan with specific goals for each term, receive mentor/supervisor approval of the plan, and submit the plan to the Fellowship office on a quarterly basis.
Residencies: Faculty Members may be required to attend virtual or in-person Residencies held domestically or internationally where they will teach intensives and colloquia and facilitate school and university-wide discussions. Part-time faculty/Fellows may but are not required to attend. Supervisor approval is required to participate.
Additional responsibilities as determined by program leadership and encapsulated in the Fellow’s annual plan.
