Job Description

American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) is seeking an enthusiastic and student-centered Pathology Faculty Member to join our basic medical sciences program in St. Maarten.

This role is ideal for an educator who is passionate about helping future physicians understand the mechanisms of disease and the role of pathology in clinical practice. The successful candidate will deliver innovative, interactive instruction in pathology, including histopathology, while fostering student engagement through active learning, small-group teaching, case-based discussions, and simulation-based education.

At AUC, clinical skills training begins in the first semester and continues throughout all five medical sciences semesters, supported by an exceptional simulation center that utilizes professional standardized patients. We are seeking a faculty member who is committed to academic excellence, collaborative teaching, and student success.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Student Learning

  • Teach pathology, including histopathology and mechanisms of disease, with a focus on the underlying causes of common human diseases and current diagnostic approaches in clinical pathology.
  • Develop, update, and deliver engaging educational content, incorporating student and peer feedback to continuously enhance the learning experience.
  • Facilitate interactive lectures, small-group learning sessions, case-based discussions, and simulation-based activities.
  • Supervise and support student learning in both actual and simulated clinical environments.
  • Serve as a positive professional role model, supporting students' academic, professional, and social development.

Assessment & Curriculum Development

  • Design, administer, and evaluate formative and summative assessments that prepare students for licensing examinations and clinical rotations.
  • Participate in curriculum planning, development, integration, and delivery to ensure a high-quality educational experience.

Service & Professional Engagement

  • Maintain expertise in the discipline through ongoing professional development and scholarly engagement.
  • Serve on university committees and actively contribute to institutional initiatives and activities.
  • Participate in additional departmental or university responsibilities as assigned.
  • Comply with all university policies, procedures, and professional standards.

Additional Information

Please note that AUC faculty members do not provide clinical care as part of their faculty responsibilities. Licensure in St. Maarten is not required for this full-time faculty position.


Qualifications

Required

  • MD, MBBS or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience teaching pathology, mechanisms of disease, or related content to medical students.
  • Strong knowledge of pathology and disease mechanisms, including content areas relevant to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills, with a demonstrated passion for working with students.
  • Proficiency in educational technologies and digital tools that enhance teaching effectiveness and student engagement.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in applying contemporary teaching and learning methodologies.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness and ability to reside in St. Maarten.

Strongly Preferred

  • Completion of residency training in a medical specialty, with recent clinical practice experience, preferably in pathology.
  • Clinical and teaching experience in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom.
