Reporting to the Department Head of Clinical Sciences, the successful candidate will join a collaborative and supportive team of faculty dedicated to delivering a forward-thinking small animal teaching program within the preclinical veterinary curriculum. This role involves contributing to the instruction of small animal surgery across multiple courses and participating in additional didactic courses aligned with the candidate’s area of expertise. Engagement in preclinical laboratory instruction—such as surgical skills and introductory clinical experience labs—is also expected.
The role includes providing occasional surgical consultations within the on-campus community practice clinic and mentoring faculty within that practice setting.
Candidates are expected to develop an active research program. The School supports research in infectious diseases and animal health in tropical environments through strategic initiatives and internal funding opportunities; however, applicants are expected to pursue external research funding as well.
Service to the institution is an integral part of the position, including participation in faculty meetings, assigned committees, postgraduate mentorship, and regular office hours. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Department Head as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching:
Contribute to team-taught courses in small animal surgery
Teach in case-based and other relevant didactic courses
Participate in Essential Veterinary Skills (EVS) laboratory sessions
Provide clinical consultation and mentorship to faculty in the Ross University Veterinary Clinic
Research and Scholarly Activity:
Establish an independent and/or collaborative research program
Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
Present research at national and international scientific conferences
Service:
Serve on university and departmental committees
Participate in the supervision and mentoring of Master’s and PhD students
Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by departmental leadership
A DVM or equivalent degree and board certification in Small Animal Surgery (ACVS or ECVS) are required.
A PhD in addition to a DVM is highly preferred.
Candidates with experience or interest in innovative, student-centered teaching methods are strongly encouraged to apply. Developing a research program aligned with the School’s focus areas—whether discipline-specific or in veterinary education—is essential.
Prior teaching experience at an AVMA-accredited institution or equivalent is preferred.
The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to work collaboratively within a collegial academic environment.
